Pretty Flowers

Tahmina’s family owned a field with opium poppy. Tahmina was an expert with poppies even at the age of 12. She and her brother Zameer used opium plants to earn money. Being poor they were in debt of Mr. Najibullah for their purchase of basic needs of life. They grew opium to return their debt. One day when Tahmina and Zameer were harvesting opium, two bulldozers entered their yard to trample down the poppy plants as the police said that growing opium was illegal as people in Paris got addicted with it. Tahmina, Zameer and their mother made a chain of their hands in front of their field to save it from destruction bit it was all invariable, the bulldozer did not stopped moving and it destroyed the whole opium poppy field. Tahmina’s family hopes to live a debt free life and have a bright future have vanished with the destruction of their harvest. This was a big shock for the family. When their father returned the village he was told all that had happened. He went to his loaner and when returned back. He told Tahmina to accompany him the next day to meet Mr. Najibullah. Tahmina’s father sold her to Mr. Najibullah as he had failed to pay his debt. When Tahmina came to know this she tried to run but her father held her firmly and walked back to the house. Her father was very sorry for Tahmina and cried but Tahmina was calm as she thought her sacrifice would get rid her family of the debt they owed.

  1. If you were Tahima and you found out our father did this to you how would you react to a situation like this?

  2. What do you think tahima should have done? Also do you think that whatever she decided was the right decision? Were there was any symbolism in the story that was signficant to the story?

  3. How would feel if you were in Tahmina's position? Would you react the same way she did or differently?

  4. Rita : if i was in place of Tahmina then i would first think of other way to get the debt paid off but if not then i would sacrifice myself for them.

Nikita: i think she didn`t see any other way to way the debt off so she decided to sacrifice herself, so i think if there was no other option then. .yes it was a right decision and symbolism that was used was that girls always have to sacrifice and they are things that can be used.

Komal: i think i would have done the same things... because she couldn't see another way and only thing she could see was the debt.

  6. Obviously not understanding the whole situation, I personally would never go to such extremes. I would hold on to my family through the hardship and give up all my possessions if I had to. Family first.

  7. yes, i agree what you are saying, but Tahmina thought of her family first that's why she didn't run to escape.
